Serving God in the community of Norwalk

Back in 2003, the people who formed Crossroads Church cast a vision – to be a people who serve God in the community of Norwalk. In other words, the purpose of Crossroads was to be a community church.

It's not just a catchphrase. In Matthew 28, Jesus urges us to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." The word "go" is key. We truly desire to reach out and be part of the community, not just a building in the community. Everything we do is based on the idea of serving God in this way.

Our mission – to reach and to grow

Reaching the disconnected and growing the connected

through seeking, sharing and serving.

The very first word of our mission statement says it all. We desire to reach out to those in our community who don't know Christ, not just sit and wait for the community to come to us. And once we have reached the disconnected, we desire to help them grow in faith and spiritual maturity so that they may join us in carrying out our mission.

We do this in three ways: Seeking, sharing and serving.

Seeking God

In every aspect of our lives, we seek the living God – for guidance, for strength, for forgiveness, for love. We do this in worship, where we show our love for God through song and get to know Him through His word. We also seek Him in our daily lives through devotion, prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. Seeking God is more than a mission. It's our purpose in life. We pray you'll join us in making it part of yours, too!

Sharing our lives

Christ never meant for us to go through life as "lone wolves."

In the book of Luke, Jesus calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. In other words, Christians should support one another, counsel each other, teach one another, and encourage one another in the faith.

We call this "sharing our lives," and it's the second way we carry out our mission at Crossroads. There are many ways you can do this with us – through LifeGroups, friendships, social gatherings, service projects, and more. As you meet people at Crossroads, we encourage you to become part of the lives of others. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they will become friends who celebrate your joys with you and support you in times of sadness. Connecting with others is essential to your joy on earth!

Serving our community

The third leg of our mission is vital to our vision of being a community church. You might not realize it, but as many as 1 in 5 Norwalk residents live near or below the poverty line.

What is our response? God's word is clear:

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25:40

At Crossroads, we take seriously our vision to serve by helping the less fortunate in our community. For example, we collect hundreds of pounds of food each year for the Norwalk Food Pantry, which provides food staples and other necessities to the hungry in our area. We work in conjunction with the Iowa Food Bank to help feed hungry children in our school system. We partner with the A.C.T.S. Network to provide coats, hats, gloves and boots for children in the wintertime. These efforts are to name just a few.

Service is also needed within our own congregation. A building of this size sitting on 20 acres needs the love and care of many volunteers to maintain. Food needs to be prepared and served. Worship and technology teams need passionate, competent volunteers. Those who are hospitalized need love and care. The list goes on and on – it truly takes a village.

We hope you'll seek out opportunities to join us in this important part of our mission. To help us understand where your interests and passions lie, please download and complete this form, then turn it in to the church office. And thanks for your service!

What we believe

  • God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has existed eternally.
  • Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross and being raised into heaven.
  • The Holy Spirit is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation.
  • The Bible is God's Word to us. It was written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by sin.
  • We can never make up for our sin by our good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can we be saved from sin's penalty.

What we value

  • We value the belief that every person needs Jesus as their Savior and His Biblical moral compass to guide them through life.
  • We value the Biblical truth that every believer has unique gifts to be discovered, developed, and used to strengthen the work of the church.
  • We value the non-negotiable necessity that every believer has the purpose of fulfilling the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.
  • We value children and youth and believe they have a special place in the heart of God.
  • We value ministry decisions made by those closest to the front line of a ministry area guided by the purpose and value statements of Crossroads Church.
